The camshaft is one of the most critical components to your vehicle’s engine performance. A camshaft functions as the controller of the opening and closing of the valves. This then controls the flow of air and fuel into and out of the engine, which determines engine performance, fuel economy, and emissions. This air and fuel control is made possible because as the shaft rotates, the lobes push the valves open in sync with the crankshaft gear. As the camshaft rotates, the cam lobes move up and down.
The performance modification of an aftermarket camshaft stems from two forms of change. The first being altered valve lift. This typically refers to a higher lift on the lobe, which increases in length of the valve stroke, which then allows for more air to enter through the inlet valves, increasing the power potential of the engine.
Another option is altered valve timing, which is where we modify precisely when the valves open and close. This affects power output, emissions, and more.
There are a variety of factors that play into choosing the appropriate performance camshaft for your vehicle. For starters, the current modifications your vehicle has such as intake and exhaust manifolds, exhaust system, etc. We also look at your vehicle’s cylinder heads, transmission, tire size, differential gearing, and more.
Choosing a performance camshaft truly depends on what your personal goals are for your vehicle. Do you enjoy taking your vehicle to the race track? What about towing the heavy camping trailer? Maybe you feel like you are at the gas station more often than your own home. Whether you’re looking for more power, more torque, or better mileage, an aftermarket performance camshaft can help achieve these goals. Our engine machine shop will work with you to determine what it is going to take to not only meet, but exceed the vision you have for your vehicle’s performance.
From dyno tuning, to custom engine builds, to head porting and beyond, we are here to give your vehicle the excellent performance you’re looking for. Give us a call today to discuss your goals for performance camshafts.
